Scott's Visas News Update
CORONAVIRUS: MONGOLIA SUSPENDS NEXT DAY SERVICE
06/02/20
Mongolia has temporarily suspended its next day visa service, in response to the coronavirus situation. This applies to applications for all visa types, and means all applications will now take one week to process. In addition, all applicants must now include an itinerary confirming that they are not travelling to the country from China.
JAPAN INTRODUCES CORONAVIRUS FORM
03/02/20
Due to the coronavirus situation, all visa applicants to Japan must now complete an extra questionnaire. This requires information on whether the applicant has travelled, or is going to travel, to Hubei or Zhejiang Provinces in China in the 14 days before arriving in Japan.
SCHENGEN FEE INCREASE
20/12/19
On the 2 February the fee for all Schengen short stay visas will increase from €60 to €80, while the reduced rate for certain nationalities and minors will be raised by €5 to €40. Applications will also be accepted up to 6 months in advance, as opposed to the current 3 month limit. These changes are to ensure stronger security screening, as well as helping to ease the difficulties of Schengen visa applications.
eVISAS ONLY TO TANZANIA
22/11/19
The Tanzanian High Commission in London has now completely stopped processing all visa applications. However, the good news is that online eVisas have been launched instead, and are available for the full range of travel purposes. Priced at between $50 and $100 USD for most purposes, they are processed in 2 weeks for most nationalities, although can occasionally take up to 2 months.
VFS NOW HANDLING IRELAND VISA APPLICATIONS
24/09/19
The increasingly popular Vfs Visa Application Centre in London's EC2 area are now handling applications for Ireland as well. There have been no major changes to the application requirements, although many details have changed, but an extra service fee of £30 inc VAT is now charged. The Vfs Visa Application Centre at 66 Wilson St, London EC2A 2BT already manages applications for many other European countries.
UKRAINE APPOINT VFS
03/07/19
The Embassy of Ukraine has appointed Vfs Global to process visa applications on their behalf. As a result all applications will now incur an extra service fee of £14.62 + VAT, and will be processed in the Visa Application Centre at 66 Wilson Street, EC2A 2BT.
RUSSIA BRINGS IN CHANGES FOR USA NATIONALS
05/03/19
Russia has set all consular visa fees for USA nationals to a flat £125, irrespective of the type of visa or the number of entries. There is also now no express service for USA citizens, and all visas process in 15 calendar days. These changes apply to all visa types, including for family members of a Russian citizen.
UZBEKISTAN ENDS VISA PROCESSING IN THE UK
22/02/19
Uzbekistan have stopped processing visas in the UK, leaving tourist e-Visas as currently the only simple and fast method of obtaining a visa to the country. Other visas are still available, for business in particular, but the application process must now be undertaken in Uzbekistan by an inviting company or individual. Once approval has been granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visa will issued on arrival in Tashkent International Airport.
RUSSIAN VISA FEES SIMPLIFIED
07/02/19
Russia have simplified and, in some cases, slightly reduced their visa fees. As of the 4 February most fees in fact reduced by a small amount, although fees for EU citizens were unchanged. Fees charged to Japanese citizens in particular dropped, but increased for nationals of Bangladesh, Turkey, Syria and Pakistan, and work and student visas are now charged at the same rate as all other types.
UZBEKISTAN EXTENDS VISA FREE TRAVEL
10/01/19
Uzbekistan, an increasingly popular destination after the ITV series Joanna Lumley's Silk Road Adventure, is extending visa free travel to 45 more countries including the UK. On 1 February EU nationals, as well as Canadians, Australians, Brazilians, Argentinians and nationals of a handful of other countries will join the 8 nationalities already able to travel there without a visa. Visits of up to 30 days, for any purpose, are allowed without a visa under the scheme.
ONLY E-VISAS NOW AVAILABLE FOR UGANDA
26/11/18
The Ugandan High Commission in the UK has now formally stopped processing all visa applications. Ugandan visas are now only available as E-Visas, applied for and granted entirely online. Ugandan E-Visas are processed in 72 hours, and the consular fee starts at USD $51.50 for a single entry visa, valid for 3 months, rising to USD $154.50 for a multi entry, valid for 2 years.
BIOMETRICS EXTENDED TO ALL CHINA VISAS
02/11/18
China is introducing biometrics for all visa applications from Mon 12 November. This means all applicants will have to attend the Visa Application Centre in person, no matter what type of visa is applied for. Biometrics were introduced earlier in the year for work visas and longer term student or family/private visas, and are now being extended to all other visas, with the result that fingerprints will now be taken every time a China visa application is made.
AZERBAIJAN PROCESSING TIMES
NO LONGER GUARANTEED
NO LONGER GUARANTEED
13/09/18
Azerbaijan visa processing times can no longer be guaranteed, according to the UK visa application centre, Visas for Azerbaijan. Applications are still being prioritised according to which of the three processing times (normal, urgent and express) is requested, but the absolute time taken can no longer be assured. This is because visas are now being processed in Azerbaijan, rather than in the UK, as has been the case up till now. Scott's are indeed noticing visas now taking longer than the expected times.
BELARUS EXTENDS VISA FREE TO 30 DAYS
29/07/18
Belarus has extended the visa free period allowed inside the country from 5 to 30 days. This applies to all 74 nationalities that have been visa exempt for up to 5 days since early 2016. The nationalities now able to spend a month visa free in the country for any purpose whatsoever include the UK, the rest of the EU, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, China, India and many more.
ALL CHINESE WORK VISAS REQUIRE BIOMETRICS
30/05/18
Since the 29 May all Chinese work visas, including short term visas for musicians and performing artists, now require biometrics to be given. Previously visas for stays of under 30 days were exempt, but the requirement has now been extended to these as well. As result even those working on brief performances in the country will now have to attend the Visa Application Centre in person to give their fingerprints.
BIOMETRICS INTRODUCED TO SOME LONGER CHINESE VISAS
11/05/18
As of 8 May the roll-out of biometrics for Chinese visa applications has been extended to include some longer term visas. Applicants studying for more than 180 days (the X1 visa), or making a family or private visit for more than 180 days (the S1 visa), will now need to attend the Application Centre to provide fingerprints. Also affected are applicants seeking to work in the country (the Z visa) for more than 30 days. The only nationalities exempted from these new arrangements are Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Israel and the USA. In the first few days of operation, the new system seems to be working smoothly, without significant delays.
CHINA ENDS HAND WRITTEN APPLICATIONS
05/04/18
The Chinese Visa Application Centre will no longer accept application forms that have been filled in by hand. Since 3 April all application forms have been required to be completed on screen, whether in a PDF program like Adobe Reader or in the Visa Centre's own online facility, before being printed, signed and submitted. Moreover, as might be expected, corrections by hand are not accepted either, so all errors must be corrected on screen before printing the page once again. Applicants may need to download an oriental fonts package to display the form correctly in their PDF program.
RUSSIAN PROCESSING TIMES INCREASE
20/03/18
One unfortunate result of the current UK/Russia diplomatic friction has been a sharp potential increase in processing times for Russian visas. These may now be as long as 72 hours for the express service, and up to 4 weeks for the regular service. However, our understanding is that in practice many visas may still be granted significantly more quickly than this. It is unclear at this stage how long this situation may last.
GABON CHANGES
30/12/17
A number of changes have been introduced by the Gabon embassy in London, ranging from remaining open a full five days a week to axeing double entry visas. In addition, visa fees have been adjusted, and their standard processing time dropped from one week to 72 hours. The same day service remains unaltered. All visas are now single or multiple entry only.
UGANDA SHIFTING TO E-VISAS
15/11/17
The Ugandan embassy is now actively encouraging all applications to be made through their online E-Visa portal, which has been operational since the middle of last year. Whilst they are still processing traditional paper applications in the embassy, it is not entirely clear for how much longer this will continue.
NIGERIA INTRODUCE BIOMETRICS
14/09/17
As of Thursday 14 September, the Nigeria Visa Application Centre is requiring all applicants to attend in person to give biometric information (ie. fingerprints). An online system is in place for booking appointments in one hour slots, at visa centres in Leicester and London. Any potential provision for agency booking remains, at this stage, unresolved. The system has been introduced at unusually short notice.
CAMEROON CHANGE PROCESSING TIMES
24/05/17
Cameroon have changed their regular service from Next Day to 72 hours, and introduced an express Same Day service for a slightly higher fee. The regular service fee remains the same, while the express fee costs a flat extra £35.00, irrespective of whether for a 3 month or 6 month visa.
NIGERIA FEE CHANGES
11/05/17
The Nigerian Embassy has dropped its own processing fee, while the OIS Visa Application Centre has increased its express fees. The best news is for applications on the regular service, for which the only change is that they are no longer charged the Embassy's own fee of either £23 (tourist/business) or £57 (TWP/STR). However, whilst applications processed on the express service also no longer pay this - which was either £79 or £113 respectively - the saving is to a large degree cancelled out by OIS's fees having risen by £70 inc VAT (tourist/business) or £100 inc VAT (TWP/STR). Nevertheless, even these express applications have seen a small overall reduction in price.
AZERBAIJAN FEES SIMPLIFIED
13/03/17
Azerbaijan have simplified their consular fees considerably, and the Azerbaijan visa centre has also adjusted its processing fees. Whilst EU nationals apart from the UK now pay a flat £30.00 consular fee for both single and multi entry visas, the rest of the world pays just £18.00 for a single entry, but £290.00 for a multi entry. Processing fees range from £20.00 + VAT for the normal service on a single entry visa, up to £160.00 + VAT for the express service.
BELARUS VISA-FREE UP TO 5 DAYS FOR 80 NATIONALITIES
22/02/17
Visitors of 80 nationalities, including the UK and the rest of the EU, can now enter Belarus for up to 5 days without a visa - for any purpose whatsoever. This only applies, however, to entry through Minsk National Airport. Other nationalities to benefit from the new arrangement include the USA, China and Japan, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil.
RUSSIA VISA FEES RATIONALISED
06/02/17
The Russian Embassy has simplified their visa fees for applications in the UK, sweeping away extensive differences between the prices charged to different nationalities. However, this has resulted in significant increases for many visas. Nearly all visas are now charged at the same rate, and only nationals of Angola, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Syria, Turkey and Vietnam will pay lower fees across the board. For UK nationals, this has meant a rise of 41% for single entry business and tourist visas, while double entries have gone up a more significant 73%. However, Brits will only pay £12.00 more for multi entry visas on the normal service - but an extra £123.00 for multis on the faster next day service.
VIETNAM EXTENDS BUSINESS PROCESSING TIMES
08/12/16
For business visas, the express service is now 3 working days, whilst the normal processing time is 1 week. Tourist visas are, however, unaffected and can still be obtained on a next day express service, while the normal processing time for tourist visas remains at 3 working days. There has also been a small increase in consular fees for all Vietnamese visas.
MYANMAR FEES INCREASE
08/12/16
As of Monday 12 December Myanmar's visa fees are rising substantially, with a 1 year business multi entry visa more than doubling from £200 to £525. A 6 month business multi entry will increase equally significantly, from £100 to £350. There's better news, however, for travellers on single entry visas - although these are rising by similar percentages they will still only end up as a relatively modest £35 (tourist), and £45 (business).
THAI TOURIST VISAS FREE UNTIL END FEB
02/12/16
As of the 1st December, the Thai consulate is waiving the consular fee on single entry tourist visas, right through to the 28 February. Good news for anyone planning to spend any part of the Xmas period on a Thai beach, or indeed anywhere in the country. Citizens of any nationality can travel there in this period without paying the normal consular fee of £25.00.
ANGOLAN ONLINE APPLICATION SUSPENDED
11/10/16
Due to technical issues, Angola's recently introduced additional online application procedure has just been suspended. It is not at this stage clear when it will be re-introduced, or even if it will remain in its current format. Further information is not expected for a week or two.
ANGOLA ADDS ONLINE APPLICATION
06/10/16
Angola has added an online application form, to be completed in addition to the standard application procedure. Since Monday 3 October, all applications for Angolan visas now involve filling in an extra form online, prior to making the normal application. The additional online fee is $40.00, and the form requires uploading documents that include a passport scan and yellow fever certificate. It is not yet clear how long the online approval process will take.
SAUDI ARABIA FEES RISING SUBSTANTIALLY
30/09/16
As of 2 October, Saudi consular fees are rising substantially. Whilst the full details are not yet completely clear, single and multiple entry business visas are increasing over 500 per cent, at current exchange rates. Family visas are rising by a similar amount, but the position on work and residence visas has yet to be clarified. Further details are expected to emerge very soon.
CHINESE EU EMPLOYMENT LETTER REQUIREMENT DROPPED
28/09/16
A matter of weeks after its introduction, the Chinese Visa Centre in London has dropped the requirement for EU nationals to provide a letter from their UK employer confirming residence here. This is good news for EU passport holders, who once again find that, like UK nationals, their citizenship is sufficient to establish their right to apply for a Chinese visa in the UK.
EU CITIZENS NEED EMPLOYMENT LETTER FOR CHINA
08/09/16
A letter from a UK employer is now required by all EU nationals when applying for any Chinese visa. Necessary from the 1st September, the letter must specifically confirm that the applicant works and lives in the UK.
GHANA TIGHTENS APPOINTMENTS SYSTEM
22/06/16
Following the recent price changes, as of the 20th June the Ghanaian embassy have begun adhering strictly to the appointment dates and times selected online. Prior to this date some flexibility was allowed, in particular to visa agencies, but applications are now being accepted at the appointment time only, without exception. Clients are advised to ensure the appointment time they select allows plenty of time for documents to arrive at our office, and any necessary changes to be made!
GHANA VISA CHANGES
16/06/16
The Ghanaian embassy have abolished their next day visa service, and increased overall visa prices. This means the quickest service now available is 72 hours, with the embassy's normal service remaining at between 2 and 3 weeks. Visa prices have risen across the board between 20% and 55%, with most increases somewhere around 40%.
SCOTT'S OPEN FOR BANK HOLIDAY
28/04/16

IRAN'S LONDON EMBASSY ISSUES VISAS AGAIN
11/04/16
After some years in which Iranian visas could only be obtained from embassies in other countries, London's own recently re-opened embassy has just started issuing visas again. Good news for those who wish to travel to the country! The embassy now requires biometric information, but this only requires one attendance in person at the embassy in London's fashionable Kensington. As the biometric info collected for the first application is retained by the embassy, all subsequent visas can be issued without a personal appearance...
SAUDI REQUIRES UK COMPANY LETTERS TO BE STAMPED
29/03/16
As of 29 March 2016, all letters from UK companies in support of Saudi visa applications must be stamped by a UK Chamber of Commerce. As far as the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry is concerned, this means the UK company must initially register with them before letters can then be stamped for a flat fee. Other Chambers of Commerce may have varying requirements for this service.
UK NATIONALS NEED ETA FOR CANADA
18/03/16
The citizens of 47 countries that are visa-exempt for Canada, including the UK, are now expected to apply for an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. The application process is not complicated and takes no more than 15 minutes, costing just $7 CAD. Whilst the ETA is currently not compulsory, and nationals of the relevant countries can still board their flights with just the appropriate travel documents, it will become mandatory in the Autumn.
INDIA SIMPLIFIES BUSINESS VISA PRICING FOR UK NATIONALS
21/01/16
India has abolished the different rates charged to UK nationals for business visas of either 6 month or 1 year validity. There is just one rate now for all validities up to 1 year, charged at a level somewhere between the two old rates. However, in practice most visas issued are still for 6 months only.

VIETNAMESE BUSINESS REQUIREMENTS RELAXED
29/12/15
An official Visa Approval Letter from the Immigration Office in Vietnam is no longer required when the purpose of travel is simply business meetings.
A normal letter of invitation from the inviting organisation in Vietnam is now all that is required, as long as no training is undertaken. In addition, there have been some small changes to the visa processing service. Normal service is now 72 hours, and the 48 hr service has been abolished completely (but the next day service remains unchanged). There have also been some minor alterations to the fees.

KENYA REINTRODUCES MANUAL VISA PROCESSING
25/11/15
The Kenyan High Commission is once again processing paper visa applications of all types.
Whilst Kenyan e-Visas are still available online, they are no longer the only means of obtaining a visa for the country. Reversing the initial e-Visa policy, in which online application was the only type allowed, the High Commission is now processing all types of applications again. This service is running exactly as it did before the e-Visa option was added at the beginning of September, giving applicants free choice between the two methods.

In addition, proof of family relationships in support of Family or Residence visas must now be legalised by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

INDIAN VISA APPOINTMENTS SYSTEM
25/03/15
On the 16th of March an appointment scheme for Indian visa applicants was put in place.
Scott's Visas now has some experience of how the new system works in practice.
The appointment must be made after filling in the application form, and the application unsurprisingly can only be submitted on the appointment date, at around the appointed time. To guarantee acceptance, it's a good idea to make appointments for between 10:30 and 11:30. Same day business visas are the only type that can be submitted straight away, regardless of when the appointment is.
For further information, please see our India visa pages.

INDIA VISA APPLICATIONS UPDATE
02/03/15
From the 16th of March an appointment scheme for Indian visa applicants will be put in place.
Indian visa applicants will need to first apply online and make an appointment. In the future, this will probably lead to applicants having to attend in person.
We believe that for now at least, we will still be able to submit applications for our clients. Please make the appointment for the earliest available opportunity after you expect us to receive your documents from you. Same day business visas (only this category) do not, we are told, need to wait for their appointment time. So we will attempt to submit applications at the earliest opportunity regardless of when the appointment has been made for.
We are launching an Indian Visa Help Desk (IVHD), right across the road from The Indian Visa Centre, to help you deal with any emergencies on the day of your appointment.

BUSINESS VISAS NEED APPROVAL IN VIETNAM
07/01/15
Vietnam business visas now require approval to be arranged from inside the country by the inviting organisation.
As of 1 Jan 2015 a Visa Approval Letter, issued by an immigration office in Vietnam at the request of the inviting organisation, must be submitted with an application for a business visa. The embassy has, however, indicated it may consider individual requests to issue the visa without such a letter.

REPORT SUPPORTS BORIS
26/11/14
A new report has given support to Boris Johnson's call for a 'Bilateral Mobility Zone' between the UK and Australia.
In 2013 London Mayor Boris Johnson floated the idea of allowing citizens of the UK, Australia and New Zealand to live and work in each others' countries without a visa. At the time Boris said, "We need to raise our eyes beyond Europe... and you could not do better than by starting with Australia". A recent report from Commonwealth Exchange has thrown its weight behind the idea, adding Canada to the list of proposed countries to be included. The report suggests modelling the idea on the existing TTTA between Australia and New Zealand, and goes on to state such an agreement "...wouldn't need any codified laws" and so could not be blocked by the EU.

UK PASSPORT IN TOP 4 FOR LEAST VISA RESTRICTIONS
14/10/14
A UK passport is one of four in the world with the least global visa restrictions, according to an annual global ranking of countries based on the freedom of travel enjoyed by their citizens.
International citizenship consultants Henley & Partners have analyzed the visa regulations of all the countries and territories in the world to create their Visa Restrictions Index, which ranks countries according to the visa-free access their citizens enjoy to other countries. The top four passports to hold for ease of travel worldwide are apparently the UK, Germany, Finland and Sweden - all tied on visa-free access to a massive 174 countries.
